Coheed And Cambria - Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One: From Fear Through The Eyes of Madness
I started jumping around like Claudio on stage when I found the third album of Coheed and Cambria on my doormat. (Though it was a bit of a disappointment that it was only a copy of the album instead of the original) As Coheed and Cambria tells a story in their music ‘Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV, Volume One; From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness’ is part one of the final chapter. So for the fans, be happy, we can still expect 2 more albums after this one before the whole story is told.
The album contains 15 songs which gives you more then 71 minutes to listen to a mix of 70’s progrock, 80’s metal and 90’s emo (as I quote the Lowlands Program book). There’s only one song you can already check out before the release (19th of September 2005 in the Netherlands, 20th in the USA) and that is ‘Welcome Home’. Visit their website for the video clip of this song. This video is without a doubt their most wicked video ever. It is radio edited, the album version is much better!
The opening song on Good Apollo is ‘Keeping The Blade’. When I put the CD in my stereo this song sounded familiar. It begins just like ‘The Second Stage Turbine Blade’ and ends just like ‘The Ring In Return’. Both opening songs (in this order) of ‘The Second Stage Turbine Blade’ (their first album, part two of the Coheed and Cambria story) and ‘In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3’ (their second album, part three of the story).
When the second song started the well known voice of front man Claudio Sanchez flew right into my ears. It reminded me a bit of the atmosphere Sunny Day Real Estate (now known as The Fire Theft) reveals.
One of the things that caught my attention listening to the first four songs of Good Apollo is that they already did two guitar solo’s. I can’t remember they did any real solo’s like this on their previous albums.
They still have this perfect balance of brave and easy listening songs and high-tech musical songs full of surprises. Check out the differences between ‘The Willing Well I: fuel for the feeding end’ and ‘Once Upon Your Dead Body’.

‘The Suffering’ contains those typical Coheed and Cambria riffs with the happy sing along lines. Almost too sweet to even get airplay on the radio. You should check out “Blood Red Summer’ from their second album ‘In Keeping Secrets Of Silent Earth 3’ on their website to know what I mean.
That’s why you can find all kinds of emotions in their music. It’s not only ‘rock hard’ music. When I heard ‘Wake Up’ I thought it would be a suitable song for on the background during a nice shag with your girl…
Those who are already familiar with Coheed and Cambria will recognize their style. Good Apollo is a typical Coheed and Cambria album. Though I have this feeling that they tried to do something new. I’m not really sure what exactly. That, my friend, you have to figure out yourself.
The last song on the album, unfortunately not on my cd because of a burning error probably, end with a bigass solo of both guitarists Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever. I’ve seen Coheed and Cambria perform twice so far and both gigs ended with this song. These guys know their instruments well!! God, can they play. For those who play guitar (or not)..it’s worth it to check them out live!
I guess this is all I had to say. I’m sorry it’s not an 100% objective review but I hope that I did give you an idea of what Coheed and Cambria is all about. Till’ next time, one love, Maurits.
